Hi, Mermaid,

Cunard and White Star merged together on the 10th of May 1934.

By the end of 1936 there were only 3 White Star ships in service for Cunard White Star and I think in 1937 Cunard started to buy White Star shares.

Cunard bought the last remaining shares of White Star in 1957.

Hi Tom!

Could you give us the sources for some of those later dates? They differ from some I've seen.

Best wishes,

Mark.

Hi, Mark,

I'll try to find the source.

Hi, bell,

The desision to sell Olympic was taken in 1935...that was only the year after the merger and Cunard had not bought any shares of White Star at that time.

the information I have in front of me says that the White Star Line was bought in 1926 by the Royal Mail Steam Packet which then went bankrupt in 1934 and sold the White Star Line to Cunard. The name White Star was retained until 1947, when the two shipping lines were taken over by the Cunard Line which is still operating today with the QE2.

hope this helps

Hi, leewright,

White Star was not sold to Cunard at that point. Cunard and White Star merged together in May of 1934, so that the British government would give them the money needed to complete Cunard's Queen Mary.

If you read my post above I did state that the white star line was bought by Royal Mail Steam Packet until it went bankrupt in 1934
when it was taken over by Cunard so that makes it 1934 when cunard and white star joined which is exactly what i said

and this information was written straight from the documentation I have from a model of the titanic I am currently building the information I have is not limited to titanic and actually covers a wide range of sea voyage and transport as well as changes over time for sea travel
