Hello,
As always, the possibility is often discussed. Whether there's any evidence for it is another matter. Cousteau felt that he had circumstantial evidence in the form of coal on the seabed, but in light of the 'gap' in the bow it's hardly surprising. Certainly any fire would have been extinguished by the sea, IMHO, but the question of: condensation; coal/coal dust; and an analysis of the temperature and conditions, and whether they were conducive [sic?] to an explosion occurring is a complex debate. Best wishes, Mark. |

Actually it depends on if it was crude oil, if you want to be sure about all that. Chemistry is such a wonder
