Hello,

As always, the possibility is often discussed. Whether there's any evidence for it is another matter. Cousteau felt that he had circumstantial evidence in the form of coal on the seabed, but in light of the 'gap' in the bow it's hardly surprising. It requires a more detailed analysis than I'm prepared to give here.

Best wishes,

Mark.

Hi Edward9139,

Certainly any fire would have been extinguished by the sea, IMHO, but the question of: condensation; coal/coal dust; and an analysis of the temperature and conditions, and whether they were conducive [sic?] to an explosion occurring is a complex debate.

Best wishes,

Mark.

indeed so, this topic has been debated at so many levels its unbelivable.

if there was oil, this was a factor. Oil is alot denser than water so oil will burn even if it is on water

Actually it depends on if it was crude oil, if you want to be sure about all that. Chemistry is such a wonder

Hello,

Since there's no record of any oil being carried, I don't see it as important in Britannic's case.

Best wishes,

Mark.
