Now that we know there could never be such a thing as an unsinkable ship (Safety features will only slow down the sinking of ships but not prevent it).

How save was Titanic when she was brand new? How safe will marine architects grade Titanic's design for the era in which she was built and even the modern era we live in? Was her design old fashioned even at the time of construction? What mark (out of ten) would shipbuilders give Titanic? Is there anyone who can comment on this?

A very good question, particularly considering much of the current safety standards were derived from lessons learned from Titanic. Of interest to the subject would be the changes made to the Olympic and Britanic (her sister ships) after the disaster. If I remember correctly the water tight bulkheads were extended all the way up to the main deck and a main deck accessways made water tight so that each watertight compartment could be a sealed box. As well as adding lifeboats of course.

Indeed, a very good question. The design was old even then, it's hard to imagen but the trio where based on the designs of the old sailing ships of the 16th century. They where built to look good, the metal was not as satisfactory at todays standads. After the disaster when the modifications where made to the other two, not all where justified. Basically, to their knowledge they went threw the flaws and tried to remedy them. However that means only if the hit a berg in that area again. Olympic never struck a berg ever. Britannic, well it was't designed to take a torpedo or a mine.

Basically, if they built Titanic again to the same spec, it would't be allowed out of the ship builders yard.

And enough lifeboats would be nice if they were to build another ship.

When the Titanic was built, she was the safest liner of the time, and even exceeded the standards set forth by the law. If she were new today, (if there was no Titanic in 1912) and built to all modern safety standards, she would be safe. But alot of these modern safety standards would not exist if it hadent been for the Titanic, so I don't really know.

True, but a large super liner was bound to go down with a loss of life like that sooner or later, I think
