huh??? the hull steel didn't meet modern day standards of the time, so it wasn't acceptable. the steel was never tested

book is not always right is it? Besides if you look at the steel under a microscope, you can see that the chemical make up of the steel, ment it was fine. But to try build a ship like the Qm2 out of it. NO WAY.

Alot of the ship building techniques have changed over the years. I recently saw a documentary on the building of QM2. Apparently the ship was constructed in several huge "modular blocks".
40-odd of these blocks (I can't remember the exact number) were then added together like Lego building blocks to form the entire ship as we know it. Each hull plate segment was cut by laser to the strictest specification. Steel quality was tested and it was amazing to see these different techniques come together. Truely an awesome task. |
