Erm the Rms Qm2 is almost 7 times more expensive and far larger and far more luxurious. Mauretania was NOT owned by the white star line, Titanic was a rip off Olympic, so she would never be given the title greateset ship ever.
Yes the iron was not of todays standards true, but it was the best of the time, though it was only 1 inch thick, but even today hiting an ice-berg is goin to cause dammage to the hull. She sank because of fatal flaws in her desing within the ship. Flaws that white star spaird no expence to rectify on titanics near identacle sister ships. |

Hi Jman782,

As far as I remember, the consensus is that the Lusitania was torpedoed; Lord Mersey's report even mentiones two torpedoes, although modern researchers broadly agree with one torpedo. It's interesting how he ended up heading the Lusitania enquiry as well. Best wishes, Mark. |

RMS Lusitania was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20, there has never been much debate about that since there were witnesses on both sides.
What was debated, was the source of a second explosion- whether it was ammunition, coal dust, or a second torpedo. With the state of technology at the time, if I was commanding a U-boat, and presented with a target like Lusitania, steaming straight in my direction, not zig-zagging, there is no way I would have only fired one torpedo. The target was just too valuable to take a chance at firing just one weapon, and even if hit, the damage could not be depended on to be fatal. I would also not want to risk a second shot so close to an enemy harbor where naval forces would likely be based. There still may have been ammunition aboard, but it is unlikely the U-boat only fired one weapon. |
