It could be that they were treated with other kinds of chemicals like leather and certain other woodwork. Pitty about the staircase though. Hey that reminds me: what happened to the huge wooden staircase? If it broke free other ships would have undoubtably have found it floating in the Atlantic.

if my sources were right and the masts were made with wood then the water would probably have swelled up the wood and would have made it rot

Maybe, but there are still there, and they look intact, I mean it is still in one peace, not in bits. It is remarkable,

the staircase probly broke when the titanic split. it probly got smashed up into little peices so it wouldn't have been recognizable even if other ships had seen it.

The main staircase was located between the 1st and 2nd funnel, so I don't see how the split, between the 3rd and 4th funnel will cause any damage. But there was another stair case there aswell. I think it was cheifly down to the impact, and there are elements of the stair case in the debre field.

Certain wood pieces were still recognized on Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss. Yet others were rotten away. Is it because certain woods dissolve slower than others or the chemical treatment involved?

i think it more has to do with the type of wood. back then their chemical treatment wouldn't really be mush. what does "towards the lights" mean?

Does anyone think it possible that the loss of life could have been less had Captain Smith ordered the Titanic to steam toward the lights in the distance (possibly the Californian). It might have been able to reach the lights within an hour or so?

The only reason I ask this is because Britannic's captain tried to beach on a nearby island when she struck a mine and (even though he couldn't beach the ship) it sank in just under an hour.

By steaming the Titanic forward she too would probably have sunk faster but all she needed was an hour or so to reach the Californian. What do you think?

Judging from this initial post, I would think it was, if smith ordered the Titanic, to keep going, towards the Californian, which was spotted, yet they failed to attract their attention. Instead Smith ordered all stop, if he kept going, even for just another, minute or so, the Californian, may have saw the danger, instead of just thinking, she was just having a party or something.

I think that that's what he should've done, but it would've made her sink faster
