There were only two things that Captain Smith could have done differently. 1) Slow down when he knew they were heading into ice and the lookouts didn't have binoculars, AND the sea was calm, so there would have been no breaking water at the base, and 2) Enforce that the lifeboats were launched full. Yes I know that he didn't decide the number of boats to have on board, but they only had so many boats, why weren't they used to the fullest extent they could have used them for. If every boat had been launched full, they could have saved 300 more people.

It wasn't his job to decide how many lifeboats to carry, he was a captain not a planner for these things.

It is quite obscene that you would call him a criminal like that, his family wouldn't be too happy if they saw this

You're right. Let's not call him a criminal, per se, but just guilty of extreme negligence. As for his family...well, they can kiss it. There are plenty of families that are non existant because of his negligence. Whether or not it (life boats, boat speed, etc) was his responsibility, it was in his knowledge.

Well, there are a lot of families who aren't alive to read this so that's their problem. But I do agree that he's not a criminal. Just a very careless captain.Quote:

It's very interesting to consider this issue. As has been pointed out, the issue of lifeboats was more one for the shipbuilders and the WSL rather than Smith himself.

With regard to speed, I am always hesitant to condemn Smith for doing what was effectively standard practise in those days -- although an error of judgement among all his contemporaries.

I didn't quite take all that in but you're on the same track as me right?

Hi Edward9139,

I don't see how I can put it any clearer. If you agree with what I've written, then I'd say 'yes' to your question, although I don't see how it matters.

Best wishes,

Mark.

Fair enough.

Best,

Hey. One of the topics is about who found the Titanic first. Ballard or the French. What's your opinion?
