Were any of the smoke stacks found? I mean did they survive the sinking? I see pictures of Titanic where the smoke stacks were, but have never seen the stacks theirselves. Did they break apart and scatter in pieces or have there been any pictures of them on the bottom?

I thought that they exploded while the ship was sinking...don't know for sure though ;).

I think they broke apart and the pieces were scattered around on the sea floor...it's either that or they exploded like SusanVA said.

the smoke stacks were made of steel, and were much more flimsy than the rest of the ship, i would think they had corroded away by the time Ballard found the ship.

btw, it wasn't the funnels that exploded, i dont think there was anything that would have made them explode, however, many of the survivors reported hearing sounds like a cannon going off which they thought was titanics boilers i've also heard other Titanic enthusiasts say that the rumbling was the rupturing of the steam mains to the dynamos from the #2 boiler room

Well from what i know the funnels were made of steel which is weaker than the ships iron. The ocean pressure could have crushed the funnels and the rusting could have done away with the rest!

The smoke stacks do not carry any weight other than its self, so they were made to just support them selfs. I also concur with what Anthony Elovestitanicmost said.

During Titanic's sinking many survivors reported a number of strange sounds coming from the ship as she sunk.
But there is not much evidence of any explosions as she sunk. :D

if you notice that Titanics's forecastle deck is right under where the first smokestack fell, hitting the submerged deck could explain the first funnel.
Or, since the smokestacks are smaller than Titanic, the rusticles could have disinagrated them.
