Isn't it truly the hope diamond? In the movie Brock says "it would be worth more than the hope diamond," but I've read that it actually is supposed to represent the hope diamond, which was worn by Louis XVI.

well i'm not sure about louis XVI and his jewels, but yes in the movie it was part of the hope diamond worn by Louis XVI and the necklace was called heart of the ocean. in real life, there was no such necklace on the Titanic. James Cameron said he made it up for a plot line. however, there was a man onboard called Samuel Morely, he had left his wife and daughter and was going to america with his 19 year old lover Kate Philips. apparently he gave her a necklace which consisted of a sapphire surrounded by small diamonds, it was called "the love of the sea" it looked nothing like the large glamouros thing in the movie. something that might have helped James Cameron get the idea of the movie is that there is an old myth going round that there was a statue with two big rare diamonds for eyes. one was called the hope diamond and the other was called something else. the hope diamond was stolen from the statue just prior to the sinking of the Titanic and everyone thought it had gone down with Titanic. i doubt very much this story is true, but thats *probaly* what gave him the idea |

Bess,
I am so glad you replied to this post. All week I have been racking my brain and looking through my books to find out who the gentleman and the woman he gave the "Love of the Sea" Necklace to were. I just could not remember their names, Thanks Betty |
