[quote:de7cecaf95="7th officer"][quote:de7cecaf95="Teamtunafish"]Hmmm....I for one would [i:de7cecaf95]love[/i:de7cecaf95] to see Cal's suicide....[/quote:de7cecaf95]
Now, now, don't be mean...he's only a product of his times and his society. Actually I can't think of a much more repressive time in our society than the late Victorian/Edwardian era--especially for women. Ugh! Don't know why I just thought of it, but remember that book 'Maiden Voyage'? About a woman suffragate and a 13 year old boy on the Titanic. The boy was in the typical adolescent throes of wanting to be treated like a man and not treated as a kid. The woman of course was all hung up on women's equality. There was a Cal like man in the story too--but he was a good guy--just conventional. Anyway, when the ship went, we see the boy wanting to be a kid and get to get in a boat, and the woman using her gender too. The man stuck it out in his sociatal role. Both the kid and the woman really saw what hypocites they and their 'causes' were and never got over it. Quite a reversal of the Cameron story, but good just the same. Not a very popular book though. Has many here read it?[/quote:de7cecaf95] I've read that...it's a good book...well, at least, I thought so. |
