OK, so why do you think he let all those lifeboats go half-illed?

Good question, Lee. I imagine it was because he honestly did not know about the weight tests on boats and gear at Harland and Wolff. I do know that on old davit systems, excessive weight was a big concern. I also think that until very late in the game, he was convinced that the ship wouldn't sink.

Lights,
Wasn't it also because there were not any lifeboat drills and therefore the crew was not aware of the capabilities of the lifeboats.

I read Captain Smith was suppose to have one but opted instead to have Sunday services and maybe this one little thing could have saved some more lives?

Mine too, Joe. Yes, he was a chicken farmer as well as a lot of other things - he seems to have been one of those people who can turn their hand at [i:0c2f329885]everything[/i:0c2f329885].

Did you know [i:0c2f329885]Sundowner[/i:0c2f329885], his boat, is still around? It's at the East Kent Maratime Museum. I'll be visiting it this summer when I'm over.
