Does someone know if there were survivors picked up in the water or anyplace other than in the lifeboats? Just watching "Night to Remember" and wondering...

Yes. out of the *i think either 300 or 700* that went on to the life boats... and 1,500 in water. only 6...6 people came out of the water alive. a miracle happened to those 6. They have a gurdian angle i guess you can say.

Officer Lowe commanding Lifeboat 14 went back to the wrecksite around 30 to 40 minutes after the ship sank. Somewhere I heared that he rescued six people out of the water, but another book said it was four. I know that one of the people he rescued (W.F. Hoyte) died soon after he was brought on board.

Collapsable B, which was overturned (and shown in ANTR), had about 20-30 people that climbed out of the freezing water. Some died from the temporary exposure and just fell off though. The chief night baker (Charles Jourgan), became the only person to stay in the water for almost two hours and not die. He eventually got onboard Collapsable B.

Collapsable A, had a problem of not being able to get its canvas sides up. So, water was in the boat to the point that it almost sank with the weight of the twenty or thirty so people that got into it. Aparently, went Officer Lowe in # 14 arrived to rescue the people off this boat, there was only 12 or so that survived the exposure from just being in a little of that freezing water.

In the book 'A Night To Remember' by Walter Lord, when Harold Lowe went back in Boat 14 they picked up 4 people - a Japanese passenger, Mr. Hoyt (who later died in Boat 14) and 2 other passengers.

A science teacher at my high school once told us a story of his mother knowing someone who had actually been picked up out of the water. I don't remember much of the story unfortunetly(sp?).

Only 6. 1 later passed away in a lifeboat and the other on the rescue ship, Carpathia. This does not include the 30 people on the overturn lifeboats.

It's interesting about Baker Joughin. I liked how they showed that in ANTR and a little in the new Titanic. It would have been nice if everyone had gotten sauced and could have pulled through. Of course he was so drunk he probably couldn't even tell it was cold....

You know, I have read that alcohol actualy give you a false sense of warmth, and that also it actually makes you loose body heat faster (don't ask me for details though).

I did have a good discussion with a friend on another forum, who believes that the reason that Jourghin survived was that he had a few pounds on everyone else (a little chunky), and therefore, that was the reason he was able to survive so long. Meaning he was well insulated. My friend also said "never trust a skinny baker". Something maybe to think about?
