I understand that the man who found the wreck is getting $1,000,000 (US) to make another dive to find out that the ship is being lost to the ocean. It's been under water for 92 years! What does he think is happening? He needs a million dollars to find out that it's rusting away??? I think the money could be better spent.

If you are referring to Bob Ballard, he is indeed going back to the ship - you'll find the details in the TV section. The one milion dollar figure is the amount that will be given to him for his oceanagraphic studies institute by National Geographic, the sponsor of the dive. Dr, Ballard personally earns only a salary on this dive, as he has on all his others.

I feel I must expand on that last. Not all the researh being done is for an historical reason; a good amount of the research going on around [i:9aa39864a5]Titanic[/i:9aa39864a5] is, surprisingly, biological. The "rusticles", they have discovered, are actually colonies of bacteria that somehow build a very elaborates structure. There are several species of sea creature indigenous to the wreck - biologists are studying these very carefually, to see if the can figure any migration patterns - how do these things get to wrecks like this in the first place? There are also questions of how a wreck collapses that are being studied by engineers. So there's a lot more going down there than taking pictures of a disintegrating wreck.

Thank you teamtuna,
I cannot wait to see it on TV. I absolutely love Ballard and think is so great!! I wonder if he ever regrets not laying claim to Titanic? when he discovered it. |

He has said he did, more because had he done so others would not have been able to touch it than for any other reason. Which would be sad, in my opinion, as so much interest has been focused on the ship by the travelling exhibit.
