Personally, I think that great value lies in this ability - magic, if you think of it right - for objects to transcend history. The Egyptian kings believed they lived forever- as long as people remembered their name. I think the same can be said of [i:9c1a6a0ed4]Titanic[/i:9c1a6a0ed4] - if these bits and pieces make a connection with an eight-year-old who sees the exhibit, just to keep her name alive for another generation in some way in the future, then it will have done its job.

I agree with most of the comments already posted. The subject has life, that may sound stupid but it's a bit like a friend.
That will do for now! |

Titanic is special to me because it is the epitome of something built by man to be so extravagant and yet it was struck down by (yes, an iceberg but also) a higher power. Man built something that was the symbol of materialism and wealth (theme for the Gilded Age) and it was taken from him; almost like putting man back in his place for trying to create perfection on earth.
It is also special because of the mysteries that are still debated even today. It's special because of all of the things that caused it to happen in the first place. You can't pinpoint one exact thing that caused it. It's special because of what has happened as a result of it's sinking. Maritime law changed, the Coast Guard was developed. I relate the reaction of the world to the Titanic's sinking to the reaction of the U.S. when the WTC and the Pentagon were attacked. Regardless of what caused them , there was such a state of shock and disbelief and awe. These were symbols of strength and wealth just like Titanic was in 1912 and in a matter of hours, they were destroyed (one in part, the other, totally). Things like these events change history, they are history, they are what makes the world as it is now. That's why they're special. |

well put; may i also add that even if you don't believe in a higher power, it's still man's hubris being conquered by a powerful natural phenomenon, when they had thought that nature and, specifically, the ocean had been conquered.
