I just re-watched something from "Titanic: Untold Stories." (DISCOVERY CHANNEL) It follows Fred Barrett through parts of the show. It mentions that Fred Barrett and other stokers were putting out some of the fires in the boilers when one of the other stokers fell through a manhole and broke his leg. Barrett tried to help him but the bulkhead collapsed and Barrett had to leave. His friend could not make it. Barrett ran up to the Boat Deck and got in a lifeboat.

That's how the show has it. I am assuming that it takes that from the story Barrett gave.

I am no engineer, but is it possible for only part of a bulkhead to have collapsed?

Absolutely. That's why it's so interesting, yet I think evidence-based analysis has a lot to be said for it so we can at least narrow down the possibilities and form a better understanding of what went on that night.

Best wishes,

Mark.

I must admit I tend to be rather cynical of documentaries, sometimes they seem to go for the more dramatic.

You would really need an enormous difference in stresses for one part of the bulkhead to fail. They were expressly designed to hold back a considerable head of water, and the strength of their construction is often overlooked. It's not so much a question of collapse, more a question of losing its watertight integrity. Edward Wilding explained it very well in testimony during 1912 and 1915.

Best wishes,

Mark.

Can anyone here direct me to any of Wilding's testimonies on the subject?

Also, I make a mistake in a former post:

The show actually said "a weakened wall collapsed..." Were there any other "walls" in or around the boiler rooms besides the bulkheads? I am assuming there are but am not sure. I don't know as much about the crew areas down below as I'd like to.

Thanks

The correct expression would be bulkhead. See Wilding's testimony -- above.

Best wishes,

Mark.

I recall seeing something like that a long time ago. And I have read about the Barrett in No. 5. Mr. Shepard fell into a manhole because there was much steam in the room and didn't see the manhole. They dragged him into the pump room. Later, "a wave of water rushed from the bow" and Mr. Harvey told Barrett to make a run for it. He last saw Harvey running toward the pump room....I imagine they concluded the bulkhead collapsed. I would conclude weakened, however, I'm keeping in mind the wave could have come from beneath the floor panels they were stepping on and opening to reach the valves for the pumps.

Hi

Thank you, guys, for the info. I'm going to start digging around through the testimonies. In all my years of Titanic-fanatisism, I have never really looked through the inquiries and testimonies. I have wanted to, though.

Does anyone know of any other sources to look to for info on the fire or the lack of watertight integrity (I like the way that sounds) in the boiler room?

http://www.titanicinquiry.org

I would search through Barrett's or Hendrickson's or another stokers testimony.
