... on the Titanic without her biological father? Any accounts I've read (not many I admit) mention only her mum Alice and brother Harry on the voyage with her.

Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone.

Cheers,
TOAD.

here is info i found about them on craig stringers cd. i'll email you tomorrow with the information i have

Mrs Oscar Walter Johnson was born Alice Vilhelmina, nee Backberg, in Helsinki, Finland, on
April 21st 1884. At the age of eighteen she was engaged in marriage to Karl Viktor Neffling, an
arrangement made by her father. The couple married in 1902, but the marriage was a failure.
Alice decided to leave Finland and settle in America. Having arrived in New York, she eventually
made her way westwards, settling in Chicago.
It was in Chicago that Alice met and married Oscar Walter Johnson, a Swedish bartender. This
time the marriage was one of love, and from it two children were born, Harold Theodor, on
January 28th 1908, and Eleanor Ileen, on September 23rd 1910. The family lived at 215, West 23rd
Street, St. Charles, Illinois.
In 1911, Alice received word from Finland that her father was very ill, and wished to see his
daughter and grandchildren. Alice made up her mind to make the journey home, but Oscar was
unable to accompany her on account of his job. Before she left America Alice learned that her
father had died. However she decided to continue with the trip, which would include a visit to
Oscar342200231s family in Sweden.
Alice spent nine months visiting her family in Finland, and the family of Oscar342200231s in Sweden. In
early 1912 she was ready to return to Chicago, planning to travel second class. However, Alice
changed her plans when she was asked to escort two single girls from Sweden to Illinois. These
girls, Elin Braf, and Helmina Nilsson were acquaintances of the Johnson family.
Elin Ester Maria Braf had been born in Medeltorp, Ramkvilla, Jonkopings Ian, Sweden, on
October 16th 1891, the daughter of Johan and Lovisa. She was intending travelling to her sister,
Mrs Annie Hammar, at 1006, Roscoe Street, Chicago. Elin had lived in the states previously.
Helmina Josefina Nilsson had been born in Akerslund, Ramkvilla, Jonkopings Ian, Sweden on
February 19th 1886, the daughter of Johan Peter and Anna Christina, nee Magnusdotter. She was
sister to Albin, Franz, Emil, Edvin, Ida, Alfrida and Hanna. Helmina was travelling to 315,
Garvey Avenue, Joliet, Illinois, intending to join her brothers, Emil and Edvin, who had
emigrated to Chicago.
The group of five travelled from Sweden to Harwich, England, on board a ship of the United
Steamship Line. From there they travelled to Southampton to board the Titanic. Travelling on
consecutive third class tickets the group boarded the liner on April 10th 1912. Helmina Nilsson
had ticket 347470, costing 3022437. 17s. 1d. Elin Braf paid the same for ticket 347471, while Alice
Johnson paid 30224311. 2s. 8d. for ticket 347472.
Mrs Johnson could later remember little of the Titanic. Most of her time on board the ship had
been taken up with caring for the children. When the Titanic struck the iceberg the group were
in bed asleep. Soon after, a steward knocked on the door, and told Alice to dress. Though the

ladies dressed hurriedly they took care to wrap the children up warmly. As they were about to
leave the cabin, Elin Braf turned back to collect some personal belongings.
Alice, carrying Eleanor, led the way to the deck. Helmina followed, while Elin, bringing Harold,
brought up the rear. The group emerged on deck close to lifeboat 15. Though Alice understood
only a little English she understood enough to follow the order to get in the lifeboat. Handing
Eleanor to a steward, who she recognised as her table steward from the saloon, Alice followed
her daughter into the boat. Helmina quickly joined them. However, Elin Braf hesitated on deck,
still holding Harold. Alice screamed to her to jump, but the frightened girl made no move. A
crew member grabbed Harold and dropped him to Alice, but Elin remained where she was as
the boat was lowered. It was a sight that Alice never forgot.
As the Titanic sank Alice turned away. She could not bear to see the end. She and Helmina were
haunted by the creams of those in the water.
Alice, the children, and Helmina were brought aboard the Carpathia the following morning, and
from there carried to New York. On their arrival they were taken to St. Lukes342200231 Hospital for a
check over. It was here that charity groups assisted the family, and it was here that a frantic
Oscar was reunited with his family.
The Johnson342200231s and Helimina Nilsson finished their journey to Illinois. Elin Ester Braf perished in
the sinking. Her body was not one of those identified during the recovery of victims after. Her
parents made a claim against the White Star Line of $5,050.00 for the loss of their daughter and
her property.
Alice Johnson gave birth to a third child in 1913, Herbert. She and Oscar would have only a
short time together as in 1917 he died of tuberculosis, at the age of 35.
After a time, Alice married again in 1919, becoming Mrs Hans Amundsen. Yet even this new
start was to end in a tragically short time. Hans died of pneumonia, and Alice adopted his two
children from his first marriage. Alice married for a final time in 1920 to Carl Peterson, a farmer
and a widower with two children. The couple had a daughter, Irene. Alice Peterson died on
December 19th 1968.
Alice342200231s son Harold Johnson grew up to become an engineer. He married a friend of Eleanor342200231s,
Harriet Trull in March 1931, and the couple had two children. Harold predeceased his mother,
dying on April 10th 1968.
Eleanor Ileen Johnson later found work as a telephone operator in Elgin, Illinois. She married in
June 1934, Delbert Shuman, a watchmaker and jeweller. They had one son, Earl. Eleanor died on
March 7th 1998.
Helmina Nilsson joined her brother Edvin, who had changed his surname to Lander. She found
work as a maid, and later married Albin Linder in 1918. Helmina Linder later returned to
Sweden, settling in Hillefallan, Rorvik. She died in 1971.
