The steel was not of the same quality as today's steel. And, the steel quality in combination with the extremely cold water may have caused the steel to become brittle. However, you "rub" up against an iceburg that is 5 stories tall, and 50 stories below the surface, you are going to get holes, lots of them. And, afterall, a ship is just a hunk of metal and wood. It will sink.

I did see something about steel characteristics on Discovery or National Geographic; the composition was indeed worse than it should be even on that day when the Titanic was built.

Steel purity requires alot of energy and technology, so its logic that ships today are harder to sink than the day of Titanic.

Hello ppl you do know that some boiler room people survived so if there was a fire we would know about it.Quote:

I did hear about the fire making the steel weaker. And if you really think about it, it makes perfect sence. Fire makes just about any substance weaker now a days, and back then steel was not as it is today. I also heard that the iceberg made a series of holes in the various departments of Titanic, thus causing water to flood more compartments than she was willing to have and ultimately causing her to sink. I saw the documentary where they used sonar and other equipment on her to prove it. Granted of course, that the "holes" were all different sizes.Quote:
also she was made of iron not steel.

I've done alot of reading on the Titanic a long time ago, and do remember some thing about a fire that was thought to be in her bow... but I don't remember a boiler being in the bow. Did she hit the iceberg where the fire was thought to be??? or behind where it was thought to be??? If they didn't know about a fire in the bow before they hit the berg, and they knew that they were hurt bad enough to sink...I would think that they would be more worried about getting out of there than checking on a fire up front. Was there a boiler up front???
