Thanks Jelle for that info on Alvin. There is so much to discovery yet in the ocean that it was inevitable Alvin would be replaced with a submersible that would go deeper and stay down longer. While we will miss Alvin and all it has given us, especially concerning Titanic, I am sure we will be seeing more discoveries on the ocean floor and more Titanic pictures, etc.

I seems odd to be talking about Alvin as if he were a human...But the way I see it, after all he has done for us in over 4,000 dives he has earned retirement. If he has to retire I'd like to see him be taken around the world with a display of things that have been discovered thanks to him so that he can be seen by kids and adults alike. Who knows...a trip like that might be what it takes to inspire a bunch of future explorers with all of the stories he could tell.
Just don't let him be the one to drive the RV...he might forget to turn off the blinker...LOL |
