Titanic could have avoided the icebergs completly. The ship could have gone around the south way instead of the north way. You know...How ships and planes travel in semi circles to travel faster? Well if they went the other way then they could have avoided the icebergs. The chose scenary over saftey.

im trying to understand what you're saying but i cant. are you saying that they shouldve tried to avoid the iceberg from the other side, or shouldve gone on a completely different route?

My understanding is the watch crew on the Californian saw rockets but they thought they were 'company signals' not party rockets. The various sources I've read on it never really explain that but I have to assume that ships of the same company would signal each other with rocket signals.

I know there has been a discussion of various things Captain Smith may have done to include getting underway again. I don't know answer as to whether that would have impacted the rate of flood or not. I think the probable answer is that by time the Captain realized that the Californian was not going to respond to his various signal attempts Titanic was no longer navigable. The boilers had dumped most of their steam load, would have taken hours to rebuild and she was listing badly towards the bow. They also had no way of know the extent of the damage to bow, so they had no way of knowing what would happen if they started the engines again.

the californian didnt go to help because they thought that these were party rockets, not help rockets. they thought that they should try and make contact with the ship but they didnt wake their radio person.

i agree with the underway thing.

All I can say is all I've ever read before now about the California's reaction was that they watch crew thought they were 'company signals' and they didn't recognize the flickering of the mast light as a morse signal. This thread is the first time I've heard of the party rockets explination. Can't say for sure one way or the other since I've never seen the transcripts from the investigations as to the Californian crew's testimony.

The party rock can be a pluasible explanation because, they did see it: according to the accounts.

But it is a hughe mistake that they made such a mistake, so i assume that nobody really wanted to talk about the fact they they mis interpreted the rockets as party rockets, i think the least they'll get is fired from the company they work for..

I'm not sure and I don't know what the standard was (if there was one, a lot of the current standards were created because of Titanic) for signal rockets. I assume they were color coded like red for distress. I recall reading in one of the accounts though that the crewman firing the rockets used the entire stock not just the ones for distress so that may have added to the impression.

I must admit I find the Californian crew's reaction puzzling, I'd think in the same position I'd be curious enough to fire up the wireless just in case. But attitudes were considerably different back then and the capability of the human mind to rationalize away things it doesn't want to deal with is considerable.

as far as i know, titanic used white rockets. but still, the californian crew shouldve turned on the radio and tried to make contact with the ship, just in case.

This could be wrong but many people have told me that white rockets meant "Get out of the way or be aware of me".

i've read that the other ship "thought that they were just having fun", because they were party rockets, the crew said.
