J. Bruce Ismay was managing director of White Star Lines, but the line was owned by J.P.Morgan.
J.P.Morgan was one of the world's richest men, who made most of his money in railroads, and was an American. You can say that Titanic was a British flagged ship, but owned by American intrests. Jim :pint: |

On salvage rights, I think it was just that an American company applied for salvage rights and had the ability to reach the wreck. :pint:

The 23 knots speed gives lie to the stories about her trying for a speed record.
Mauretania held the Blue Riband for a 1909 crossing at (I believe) 36 knots.a speed Titanic with her reciprocating engines did not have a prayer of approaching. (Mauretania was turbine powered) Jim :pint: |

Actually the passenger ships of the Cunard Line were known for thier speed, such as Mauretania.
White Star Line was known for style and service. Some accusations were leveled at Titanic's Captain that he was going for a record on the Atlantic run, but she was not capable of bettering the existing time for a passenger steamer on that run. Jim :pint: |

Be that as it may it wasn't Captain Smith's fault. It was by the orders of J. Bruce Ismay that he increased his speed, and lit the last four boilers in the boiler room. Ismay was out to obliterate the Cunard Line's business, and shatter Atlantic speed records, by beating the estimated arrival time to New York City. I'm not sure about this one, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Captain Smith alter the ship's course at one point in time during the voyage?
