Why do you think so many crew survived? I think it interesting that 214 crew lived. While so many other passengers were left behind. In no way am I saying the crew didn't have a right in that seat in a lifeboat. Any soul on board should have had an equal right. But what are your thoughts? Just luck or desire to get in?

Never really gave that much thought. But I guess you could make the arguement that each boat needed experienced employers to man the boats. I know there was a specific number that Lightoller wanted for each boat (seaman) but I cannot remember the number.

Maybe Murdoch's side had more men get in as crew? Maybe he decided on a bigger number of seamen for his boats? And, maybe since he was not as discriminating as Lightoller about letting men get into his boats?

A steward (I think it was Fredrick Dent Ray) said in an interview that he decided to get into a boat because he felt that since he was a crewmember, it was his job to help row. So, maybe that is something to think about.

MGY- Yes I heard Lightoller was more strict on how many crew got in the boats. Most likely 2-3 per boat on Lightollers side. Like we've stated, Lightoller followed Women and Children only. Murdoch followed women and children first.....then whoever else wanted to get in the boat. I do agree though about having more experienced sailors manning the lifeboats would be a good idea.
