I wonder if anyone actually did try and reason with him? If you notice in ANTR and Titanic(97) both times we see people asking him to "Won't you even try for it Mr. Andrews?"

I'd try to reason with him about the fact that it wasn't his fault that the ship was sinking. He had done only what he thought was right in creating this emperor of luxury liners. Probably would have failed, in which case, I think I would emerge from the First-Class Smoking Room and descend down the sloping deck until the icy waters would come about to greet me.

I think it was to make her calm. Also the watertight compartments had a great value as a commercial for the ship.

If I remember correctly, Ruth Becker said that her mother was a lttle nervous about the trip and told that to a White Star Official when she was checking in (purser or steward maybe).
And he told her that she did not have to worry because of the ship had watertight compartments and that the ship would stay afloat for a long time or until help arrived (or something like that). |

It was the media that claimed that.

I believe that it was said that with the level of compartmentalization the Olympic class ships had would make them 'practically unsinkable', though I'm not sure if it was White Star that said it or Harland and Wolff, but I do believe you are correct. I know that during the inquiry, Harland and Wolff said that they never made a claim that the ship was unsinkable. Daniel |

Of course people are idiotic enough to claim that the Californian could have saved all lives. Then forcing her master to resign doesn't impress me. Both Sen. Smith and Lord Mersey had wrong conclusions...I'm sorry. Like I said, just rotten luck.

Yeah....I do recall hearing that no one on the White Star Line saying she was unsinkable. Thomas Andrews obviously could have told us she wasn't. I'm curious to see what what said amongst Ismay, Andrews, and Smith. I know they portray him in most of the movie "But this ship can't sink." I felt it was someone dumb blaming Ismay or Lightoller for living. I guess the one true fault was just the rotten luck that she would be steaming 23 knots into an ice field.
