Titanic attractions : Titanic: Made In Belfast 2007

This is the itinerary for the Titanic:Made In Belfast Festival 2007, which will run from 7th April to 14th April 2007.


OFFICIAL FESTIVAL OPENING
TITANIC MADE IN BELFAST will be officially opened on Saturday 7 April at 10am in Belfast City Hall by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Pat McCarthy. Also joining the Lord Mayor will be the President of the Belfast Titanic Society, John Andrews and a special welcome is extended to the President of the French Society, Christian Gorree. All welcome.

‘TITANIC – PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE’ EXHIBITION
Saturday 7 – Saturday 14 April, 10am-6pm

This exhibition explores the development of the Titanic from her construction until the present day and into the future. The exhibition will focus on three main areas in the Titanic story – the Past, the Present and the Future.

There will be images, artefacts and stories relating to Titanic and the people who helped create her. The Present element will show how Titanic is reflected in today’s society through the media, models, murals, posters and much more. There will also be information on the restoration SS Nomadic and the progress of Lagan Legacy.

The Future section will show proposed future plans for Titanic Quarter, the largest mixed-use waterfront development in Europe which will transform the area into a new maritime quarter creating a vibrant new community for Belfast.

The Northern Ireland Science Park, also headquartered at the site where Titanic was built, is helping to refocus that Titanic vision for a modern era and position Northern Ireland at the forefront of the knowledge revolution.

HENRY ALDRIDGE & SON ARTEFACTS

Henry Aldridge and Son of Devizes, Wiltshire are the leading auctioneers in the world of Titanic and White Star Line memorabilia and during the week-long TITANIC MADE IN BELFAST festival over 250 museum quality items will be on display. This is a unique opportunity to view the entire contents of Aldridge’s April 2007 auction.

LIVING HISTORY

12pm – 4pm (on the hour)

See and hear characters from the Titanic story make their way through history from Titanic’s Past to the Present and into the Future. Hear them marvel at what has become of Titanic in today’s society and what is proposed for its Future……come and eavesdrop on the re-enactors.

TITANIC MEMORIAL PLAQUE
Saturday 7 – Saturday 14 April, 10am-6pm
Marble Area, City Hall
Admission free - No ticket required
On a dive to the wreck of Titanic in August 2005, BBC NI’s Environmental correspondent Mike McKimm and professional diver, Rory Golden, placed a memorial plaque to the hundreds who died in the sinking on Titanic’s bridge on the sea bed.

A second replica plaque was also placed on the bridge of Titanic for a few moments, removed and has now been brought back to Titanic’s home city. This simple, yet poignant, plaque representing a long overdue re-connection between the city and the ship will be on display in Belfast City Hall for the week long festival.

TITANIC ON FILM

Take this opportunity to view footage of the ship via archives, documentaries and dramas as she was in Belfast in 1912, as she is now on the seabed and how she has been represented on the screen. A timetable of viewing will be available daily during the event.

‘TITANIC’ THE MOVIE

To celebrate the 2007 Titanic Made in Belfast Festival, Storm Cinemas, Odyssey Belfast, will be screening the fictional romantic tale of a rich girl and poor boy who meet on the ill-fated voyage of the 'unsinkable' ship - 'The Titanic' starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet.

After a successful appearance at the 2006 CS Lewis Festival Pat Speight returns to Belfast to enchant you with family stories to make you cry and to scare and cheer. Joining us from Cork, Pat is one of Ireland’s best known traditional storytellers who will tell stories that inspire and captivate the imagination.

STORYTELLING with NIALL de BURCA

Back by popular demand and more dangerous than the pied piper, the fantastic Niall de Burca, is once again coming to Belfast to share his stories and will cast a spell on young and old alike. SS Nomadic, the last of the once-mighty White Star Line, was built to carry 1st & 2nd class passengers out to Titanic & Olympic when they called in to Cherbourg, France. Now, this last floating link to the ill-fated liner has returned to Belfast to undertake a full restoration which may take up to 5 years.

Although her upper decks are missing, inside she bears many of the finest features which adorned her bigger sisters and she opens her doors to the public once more during the 'Titanic Made In Belfast' festival.

Also on board you will experience the world-class 'White Star Memories' exhibition; Europe's finest and largest privately-owned collection of WSL memorabilia & artefacts. Don't miss it!

TITANIC BOAT TOURS

Leaving from Donegall Quay (tour lasts approximately 1¼ hours)

The boat trip will take you from Donegall Quay to the actual place on Belfast Lough into which Titanic was launched on 31st May 1911.

THE YARD - Lagan Legacy maritime exhibition

M.V. ‘Confiance’
Free Admission – no ticket required
The exhibition will take place aboard the M.V. ‘Confiance’ moored at Lanyon Quay (beside the Belfast Waterfront Hall). This exhibition will be based on shipbuilding in Belfast utilising unique data collected by Lagan Legacy’s ‘Oceans in Mind’ reminiscences project.

BUS TOURS OF QUEEN’S ISLAND
Daily, Saturday 7 April – Saturday 14 April @ 11am & 2pm
Leaving from City Hall (tour lasts approximately 2 hours)
Free Admission but ticket required - Available from Belfast Welcome Centre
The Bus Tour begins from Belfast City Hall and visits on route Titanic related areas on the former site of H&W. The experienced guide will set the Titanic story in the context of Belfast’s fascinating maritime history.

The final stop on the tour is the Thompson Dry Dock and Pump House which were built especially for the ‘Olympic Class’ liners, of which Titanic was the second.

The tour lasts approximately two hours and we suggest you have appropriate footwear and clothing. Please note this tour is not suitable for children under 7 years of age.

WALKING TOURS - THOMAS ANDREWS’ BELFAST

Belfast City Hall which celebrated its centenary in 2006 stands in the centre of Donegall Square, dominating the City's principal shopping area and adding a distinctive outline to the Belfast skyline.

The splendour and grandeur displayed so proudly and created so magnificently by the craftsmen of Belfast in the interiors of City Hall, can be seen reflected in the public rooms onboard Titanic. In walking the corridors and climbing the staircases of Belfast City Hall it is possible to envisage what it was like on Titanic.

TITANIC COMMEMORATION SERVICE
Sunday 15 April, 12noon
Belfast City Hall
This day marks the 95th Anniversary of the sinking of Titanic. A simple ceremony commemorating everyone, especially all the local people, who lost their lives that fateful night, will take place at the Titanic Memorial, which was built by public subscription, in the grounds of Belfast City Hall. This event is hosted by the Belfast Titanic Society - all welcome.


Please note: Many of the sites used during the festival are industrial by nature. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for outdoor weather.
