Titanic Memorabilia
A Titanic survivor's eyeglasses
Gold plated wire frame spectacles by "Imperial", serial no. 1002642. In a leathercloth covered, velvet lined case. Originally the property of Mr Nikola Lulic, 3rd Class passenger and survivor.

Footnote:
Nikola Lulic was born in 1883 in Croatia. He deserted from the Austrian army in 1902 and traveled to America where he worked as a miner in Chisholm, Minnesota. He visited Croatia to see his family in 1911 for six months and then returned, acting as an unofficial courier to a group of immigrants, who paid his fare of 170 Swiss Francs. He boarded the 'Titanic' at Southampton, and occupied accommodation in the forward part of the ship, with the other single 3rd class male passengers. He was rescued by the 'Carpathia' from lifeboat 15, with the spectacles in his jacket pocket. His companion, Jan Jalsevac later stated that he had managed to secure a place in the lifeboat by wearing a sailors cap. Of the over 400 single male 3rd class passengers, only 55 survived. Lulic remained in America until after WW1 when he returned permanently to Croatia, dying in 1962.
