Hamble valley the strawberry coast - Titanic Eastleigh's Hidden Histories

Hamble Valley and Eastleigh Heritage Guides have just completed their project on Eastleigh’s Hidden Titanic Histories. The undertaking was supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which enabled the group to research the local links with the Titanic tragedy and produce an information leaflet about those links. The results of their researches even surprised the guides themselves, ’When we had gathered all the information together we realised that we had uncovered people from every part of the Titanic story’, said their Chairman, Eric Reed.

Local people from across the Borough included the excitement of departing passengers, various crew members including the highest ranking surviving officer Charles Lightholler and the Captain of the rescue ship Carpathia. There was even a White Star shipping clark, who would have been involved with writing the disaster reports and the mass of paperwork that involved. Others were concerned with the administration of the Titanic Relief Fund, and the full tragic story of the Collyer family from Bishopstoke was uncovered. The free leaflet is available from local libraries, community centres and local museums in the Borough. If you would like some for your local society, organisation or school please contact Mary South
