I agree with Mark,

At the time, Titanic's design was quite an improvement and widely praised. It is ironic that this fact has been overlooked over the decades.

However, I have always wondered how the Titanic's performance would have differed if she had had the four propeller configuration as did the rival Lusitania.

But I prefer the three prop configuration just for the fact that it is more pleasing to the eye. Titanic could have outlived many vessels had that iceberg not got in the way...

Hi Titanicsoul,

If you're confused about what I was saying, please feel free to ask and I'll try and explain more clearly.

What exactly was your question?

Best wishes,

Mark.

Well it did survive, troop transport, never sank and managed to sink an enemy submarine.

and yes titanic took over but only due to some few hundred tons of weight. I am not completley sure but did olympics gross weight not exceed titanics after the modifications to its desing following titanics demise?

In 1911, Olympic's gross tonnage was 45,323.82 tons; Titanic's gross tonnage was 46,328 tons in 1912. In 1913, after her 1912-13 refit, Olympic's gross tonnage rose to 46,358 tons (more than Titanic's); and in 1920 Olympic's gross tonnage rose even higher to 46,439 tons (where it remained until 1935).

Displacement is a more accurate measure of weight (gross tonnage is actually a measure of enclosed space and not weight, which is confusing since it's called '...tonnage'!), and some sources have Titanic's displacement at 250 tons more than Olympic's in 1912; it depends how heavily loaded a ship is (how much coal it has, how many passengers, etc.) but I believe that Olympic's average displacement would have surpassed Titanic's from 1913.

That's a long way of saying that I agree with you, Bell! (SMILE)

Best wishes,

Mark.

Couple? I thought I was the only 'nerd'! (Just joking...not that it's a funny joke of anything.)

I failed a number of maths exams when I was at school...it's something that tends to improve with age (a very slow improvement in my case -- lol).

Best wishes,

Mark.

Where are my manors?

Hello Mark nice to hear from you again, how have you been?

Yes math’s, it is a tricky subject, so much so I now fear triangles lol dam cosine rule.

Anyway, the Titanic rudder WAS big enough by law, so making it bigger; well what would you do that for? Ice-berg? HA no such incident had been foreseen

Hindsight yet again

Cheerio
