the bow was also full of water when it started sinking, unlike the stern which was still releasing air as it went under

That was a bow first (head on) decent where it continued in a non stop forward motion with a pitch either to starboard or port causing a higher rate of decent speed in a slight spiral decent

I think that the broken-off end of the bow contributed to the decent angle due to the bent plating, which would cause hydrodynamic changes to the hull like flaps do to aircraft.
However I think that would make it rather impossible to predict the exact decent scenario. I aggree with CaptainJack on the estimated speed at which the bow hit the bottom. Is it safe to say that the bow (below the mudline) would be crumpled up due to the density of the mud and the impact? |
