Hi Edward9139!
As I remember it, the expedition was a joint American-French expedition. Best wishes, Mark. |

He caused the Olympic insodent, and nearly did the same on the Titanic maiden voyage, But yeah he hardly did much wrong, also bear in mind, how big ships enlarged over the last decade(1901-1911).

Hi!
I'd hardly say that Captain Smith 'caused' the 'Olympic insodent' [sic]. Much was made at the time of the fact that the Olympic was under compulosory pilotage in the form of experienced Trinity House Pilot George Bowyer. Bowyer's commands were followed onboard the Olympic prior to the collision. Meanwhile Commander Blunt and the Hawke's helmsman should not be viewed without a critical eye. Blunt exclaimed to the helmsman before the collision 'What are you doing?' before ordering the ship's wheel 'hard a port' which appears to signify the possibility that a mistake was made on the Hawke which brought her too close to the Olympic in the first place. There are other relevant examples. Best wishes, Mark. |

Hi Edward9139,
While it's your choice as to what you read, don't you think that if you don't read an opposing viewpoint then you won't learn much from any discussion? Surely that is what we are all here for? Best wishes, Mark. |
