Hi Bell!
Yes, it's the Captain's *legal* responsibility. You're quite correct. But from a 2005 perspective, as opposed to a 1911 one, it's hard in my opinion to state that Smith made a mistake himself if a Pilot was in charge. We seem to agree on that. As to the issue of the Titanic's near collision, I haven't made any sort of detailed study in recent years so I wouldn't want to express an ill-informed opinion. Best wishes, Mark. |

Hi Johno,
Captain Smith is in his white summer uniform, so this was most likely taken in summer 1911 when he was in charge of the Olympic. As an aside, it's a copyrighted photo from what I understand. Best wishes, Mark. |
