Hi Bell!

Yes, it's the Captain's *legal* responsibility. You're quite correct. But from a 2005 perspective, as opposed to a 1911 one, it's hard in my opinion to state that Smith made a mistake himself if a Pilot was in charge. We seem to agree on that.

As to the issue of the Titanic's near collision, I haven't made any sort of detailed study in recent years so I wouldn't want to express an ill-informed opinion.

Best wishes,

Mark.

Hi Edward9139!

I'm glad I managed to make my view clear -- I'm sorry you did not understand it before.

Apologies for misunderstanding your comment, I didn't realise you were referring to Bell.

Now, I'm off and out. A nice evening with friends, a pub quiz and some whisky, lemonade and lime beckons. Have a good one.

Best wishes,

Mark.

Hi Johno,

Captain Smith is in his white summer uniform, so this was most likely taken in summer 1911 when he was in charge of the Olympic.

As an aside, it's a copyrighted photo from what I understand.

Best wishes,

Mark.
