If the water tight doors were not cloased the titanic would of capsised and annk 40 minutes earlier, although the tilting would not be their the ship would of had a strong list making in imposible to launch the life boats and also the water would of spread more quickly on the bottom levvels of the ship where the boilers were & the men were working hard trying to keen the power on meaning the titanic would face a great panic in darknes with no life boats at all makeng the disaster far far far worse than it was. This was proven in 1996 when a documentary tried sinking an exact miniture scale model ship in a number of ways with water tight doors open closed etc the only thing that would of changed is the fact that the titanic would not of broken apart as she did. this investigation was carried out because many people said that Murdock had carried out the wrong commands thankfully it is porven he done the right thing here although it was in his command that she hit the berg to start with.

Sealord, if Titanic had capsized how much time would she have had before sinking?

i don't know if i'd want to leave her that early. the water was only 28º...enough to knock you out within a half an hour and then kill you. and if you've never been able to swim that's the worst place to go because you'll get sucked under even farther.

Hey, would Titanic have sank faster if she capsized?

I would say yes. That is because other hull openings on the main deck and above will become submerged, thereby allowing more water to enter. This happened to the Luisitania and she sank in 20 minutes. The Titanic did not capsize and that's why she took over 2 hours to sink.

One thing bothers me. While it's true that the ship must be stopped in the water (DIW) before lowering the lifeboats, I wonder why the Captain did not order the Titanic to get as close to the Californian as possible prior to stopping to lower the lifeboats. Had I been the Captain, that is what I would have done.

There would have been two advantages to this strategy. #1, it would have brought the ships closer for rescue; and #2, since the Titanic could not contact the Californian over the radio after it hit the iceburg, an approaching ship on a near collision course would probably force the Californian to man the radio to establish radio communications.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I had been one of the passengers, right after I donned my lifejacket, I would have looked for additional objects that would float, then head towards the part of the ship that is sinking first. That is probably the best place to disembark.

It would be probably best to leave the ship while it's still floating. There might be a point when the ship starts to sink very rapidly. If you are still onboard, you might be forced hundreds of feet underwater due to suction, become disoriented, and then drown.

After entering the water, I would first swim away from the ship, then thread water in the vicinity of one of the lifeboats.
