I read the article, and at the end of the day, I hope the Titanic will hold on for as long as possible.

I think your numbers jillian are more correct, 8 years I can't see happening. I saw figures what they where I cant really remember but apparantly titanic looses 10 tons every day. Something like that am not sure what it is exactly

I read that the metal plating of the Titanic is being eaten away by bacteria. They say it the the ship will be practically gone in about 30 to 40 years but that could be inncorect.

Yes where on earth did you get that figure? So that means titanic desintigrates 101 years or so after it sank........I do not think so, there are ships of the 16th century still on the sea bed today.......granted no where near as bad conditions but come on 101 years and it is gone...do not think so....many bioengineres and such claim it will colapse in on its self in 10-15 years, full desiintigration will be atleast a decade after that. The ship the now is.......well 40% less than on april 12th 1912.

i dont think that there i s a possible way to find out exactly when it will colapse...like an exact date and time.....so i dont think they would be able to put the collapse on video unless someone just happens to be down there when it does and films it...but that would be purly accidental...but if they could find out an exact date and time whenit would happen and put in on TV i would definatly watch it and definatly cry.

This is a very good question and is one that several scientists are working on. Enclosed is a link to a recently posted weblog that should give you some excellent information on the current state of Titanic and what some of the objectives will be for the coming summer's expedition. This link can be found at:

Titanic - Part VI Recent Photometric Analysis of the Shipwreck

Obviously some of these points still need to be proven via experimentation. Many of the visits to Titanic are not just for visiting the ship. Titanic gives scientists that opportunity to observe a deep water ecosystem in a controlled-environment. Obviously, care is given to preserving the wreck site and at NO time are any items retrieved. All these scientists have a deep reverence for the gravesite and do not touch the wreck or the debris field. Filming is critical for observing changes in Titanic and a photometric analysis of the video/film footage is key to seeing, firsthand, what the decay rate is on this great ship.
