people standing next to the railing would hav fell over onto the deck below or into the water, but honestly...there weren't enough ppl out on the decks to really worry about a major death toll. if she had run straight on it would've looked really bad for the White Star Line, though. it would've looked really careless.

She probably would not have sank if it was a head-on collision. Why? The seperate compartments would have actually done their job. Likely the first - maybe also the second - watertight compartment would have flooded. Because the 'berg slashed her side below the waterline for such a distance - breaching several of the compartments she was doomed.

However, imagine the brutal force of striking the 'berg at speed (over 21 knots or roughly 40kph/25mph) head-on? She was moving at a pretty rapid pace at the time of the collision. But with such a small rudder (for a ship of her immense size - she weighed 46,328 tons) couldn't turn for a damn.

Many people would likely have died from the impact alone - and from injuries later on - but she would have remained afloat and the tragic toll would not have been so high.

that is true. I didn't think of the ppl inside the ship. anyone sleeping on the top bunk would hav likely suffered an injury, but who wouldn't reather hav a few broken bones rather than die? it would hav probly ruined a lot of the boilers on impact, but even if she couldn't move she would at least be afloat for another ship to come to her rescue

No. Boilers were way back from the bow of the ship (under the smoke stacks). But the first were exposed when she was ripped along her side. As the bow sank lower and the water rose more boilers were exposed.

Head-on fewer people would have died but there would have been fatalities.

Check out the pics of my brothers Titanic model (under construction) to your right!!!
