Did you know that:
Each recovered body from the ocean was numbered. The number was entered into the vessel's log and stencilled onto a piece of canvas that was tied to each body. This identity mark followed the person through all the records and onto the photograph of the unidentified corpses taken at the mortuary, through the burials onshore, into the lists by White Star Line, to the disposition of personal effects and valuables and finally carved into the Halifax gravestone. Personal effects were put in small canvas bags stencilled with the same number.

So if we go to the graves in Halifax, the number on them was the order in which they were found?

teantuna,
Let me do a little more research on your question. I have a booklet on the Halifax cemetery but can't seem to lay my hands on it right at the minute. Will post the information when I find it

Teamtuna,
Found it !!!!
The sloping front of the grave markers all carry the same date April 15, 1912. Some have names, some do not. However, all have numbers corresponding to the order in which they were recovered.

The name of the booklet is: Titanic Halifax A guide to Sites. Page 33

I cannot be sure if I got it at a local bookstore or on Ebay
