If Titanic did go reverse engines, it may have added to the trouble.
Titanic and her sisters were not agile ships, and the small rudder area behind the center screw means if the engines were reversed, she may have lost a lot of her rudder authority by disturbing the waterflow past it. In her favor, having reciprocating engines, she had as much power backing down as she did full ahead, unlike a turbine powered ship which has only a fraction available. Jim :pint: |

I agree with you the white rockets were not signal flares they were for party. the Titanic people didn't think they would need emergency rockets because they didn't think the ship could sinkQuote:

You are right. The white rockets are for the purpose of letting a vessel know you are there. The Titanic was very ill equipped because of the false belief that she was "unsinkable". Red flares were the distress signal.

The problem is the ship was so large and moving so fast that it took longer to slow it down when the engines were reversed so they were to close by the time it began turning. Even if it was going at top speed and ported around it the iceburg under the water was so big it might still have hit it.

a big ship turns faster when its not in reverse. so they might have had a chance of not hitting the iceberg but reversing the engines just made it sure that they will hit them.
