It is very unlikely that they were switched but it is not a 100% impossible..I think as a Titanic historian...the theory should be researched just like all sources of the way she sank.
I've posted this already in this topic but this time I've added a bit more: IF Titanic and Olympic had been switched this is what people think would have happened: On the 20th September, 1911 the HMS Hawke smashed into the side of Titanic's sister ship Olympic just after Olympic had left Southampton for her 5th voyage. Olympic's starboard side was so badly damaged that it took two weeks just to patch her up! so that she could go to Harland & Wolff, Belfast, UK for 6 weeks of repairs! During this time work was stoped on Titanic. In February 1912 Olympic returned to Belfast, UK for a new propeller blade, during this time she was right next to her sister Titanic, so if they were switched it would have been done then. (All of the above is fact) Some people believe that they were switched because Olympic was no longer sea worthy and It is fact that they recieved no insurance money because Olympic was blamed for the accident. The real Titanic would have been finished as her sister (during the 6 weeks) and would have had a long career as Olympic. The real Olympic would have been refited as Titanic (don't forget they were almost identical). The plan would have been to sink Olympic and all the passengers be safely transfered to the Californian and maybe other IMM owned ships but things went terribly wrong. But: The flag ship of the White Star Line sinking on her maiden voyage is not very good for the lines publicity. JP Morgan was a very rich man. Would it have been easier to sell Olympic for scrap and at least get some money?????????????? Tom |

What about the propellers? There were correct numbers on them on the wreck. If there was this theory back in 1912, they must have had some kind of a investigation going. So where are the statements and other evidence?

I think the switch theory come to the surface after 1912.

But did it come from a realible source? Anyone could make that kind of a theory and then it would be just a legend. Is there any proof that this theory is from a GOOD source?

Regarding the point about the propellers. yes it may have the number 401 on it but they could have done this switch when the Olympic was sent back to harland and wolff to have its starboard propeller replaced. they replaced it with one of the Titanic's.
plus there are numerous websites out there going in to detail about the switch. Titanic-titanic.com being one |

i have to agree with the people that say they might have switched them over, there is far too many things that did suggest they could have done it,like for example, why when titanic was being built, change olympic to look the same?,when titanic was sailed to southhampton and back on test, why did only one stoker return on duty?the others refused to do it,well used boilers was there reason, and why send the carpathia out there with enough blankets and food for 3000? it doesnt add up at all does it!
