Baltic (2):

The White Star Lines 1900's Big four class ship the RMS Baltic (2) was launched on 21st November 1903.

The then largest ship in the world, Baltic, started her maiden voyage on 29th June 1904 from Liverpool - New York.

On 23rd January 1909 in heavy fog the White Star Liner Republic was rammed into by a ship called Florida who had many survives from an earthquake aboard, The damage was so bad that the Republic was sinking and the passengers were transfered to the also damaged Florida.

The Republic's wireless operator Jack Binns sent out a distress call which was received by Baltic via Siasconsett.

The Baltic steamed to the Republic and Florida (I'll go into this in more detail when I post about Republic) and rescued the people aboard the Florida and the few who were left aboard Republic before she sunk.

During World War One the Baltic was used as a troop ship and survived a u boat attack undamaged.

In 1918 she returned to her White Star Line Liverpool - New York service.

Baltic started her last voyage on 17th September 1932 and was sold for scrap the year later.

Medic:

The White Star Lines Jubilee class ship Medic was built by Harland and Wolff and launched 106 years ago today!!!!!!!!!! (on the 15th December 1898).

She started her maiden voyage from Liverpool - Sydney on 3rd August 1899.

In June of 1928 the Medic was sold, renamed Hektoria and converted into a whale factory, she even had a ramp put on her stern so that they could get the whales aboard her.

While she was serving as a British Ministry of war transport oil tanker, in September 1942, she was hit by a torpedo from U 608 and sunk.

Hi, Dominican12,

Over the next two weeks I am going to post a history of all the White Star Line Ships.

In this topic I have already posted a history of Adriatic (2), Britannic (3), Baltic (2), Vedic and Medic.

Hi!

Very good and informative profiles indeed! Well done.

I'm not sure if I misunderstood you, Dominican12, so my apologies if I did. The Britannic III is the 1929 vessel; Britannic II was the 1914 liner; while Britannic I came in 1874.

Best wishes,

Mark.
