Many have read how the survivors of the Titanic had to climb a rope ladder to board the Carpathia and have seen those pictures but a interesting point of fact is how the children, elderly and injuried got from the lifeboats on board the Carpathia.
Since the children, elders and injuried couldn't climb the rope ladders a different little known method was used. A burlap bag was used as a make shift vest with holes cut out for the arms and head. The children and others were then placed in a rope cargo net and hoisted aboard the Carpathia into a cargo door. Here is a rare photo of a child wearing one such burlap sack vest while he was aboard the rescue ship Carpathia. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/sundancekid17/Titanic/survivor.jpg The young boy was the husband of Grace Richards when he was a young boy after being rescued and onboard the Carpathia. The cargo bay was opened and the surviors that could not climb the narrow rope ladders where lifted to safty. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/sundancekid17/Titanic/Carpathia.jpg You can see the rope ladder in this photo if you look closely. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/sundancekid17/Titanic/ladder.jpg If you would like to receive a actual short story as told by survivor Eva Hart in her own words just email me a request and I'll send you a 1.18 mb .wav file to listen to. |
