No this isn't an April Fool!
Northern Ireland artist Rita Duffy is planning to tow an iceberg to Belfast, the birthplace if Titanic, as some sort of bizarre "performance art", with it slowly melting on its final journey 15 miles up Belfast Lough to Belfast. The idea is being planned for 2008 to celebrate the redevelopment of Titanic Quater, the area where Titanic was built. Some of her project is secret, but she admits it could be done. What do you think? Good idea or just very bad taste. For more on the story, check th following link http://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/02/23/nberg23.xml |

To reply to your question, I found a website all about icebergs, including how to tow one. The reply to that question is as follows;
"Towing icebergs was first demonstrated in 1971 in Newfoundland. It is now a common practice in the management of icebergs for the offshore oil industry. Towing may not be the best term however, as often massive icebergs are merely deflected slightly from their paths. The tow is arranged by a vessel navigating around a berg while paying out a floating tow line. A junction is made so that the berg is lasooed and then tow tension is applied carefully to avoid rolling the berg or pulling the line over the top." Check out the whole site http://www.wordplay.com/tourism/icebergs/ |

Its a delicate science, I am sure there is alot of concern for the Oil industry as the rig can't move away. so they better make sure its not hitting their profitability.
I think it wouldn't be a bad idea. For the people that parished i think it enlightens this generation that an ice block could sink a ship 100 years ago. With the radar technology we have this day it seems avoidable as you never see it in the news that a ship sank because of an ice berg. Another site I found to that is the us coastal and they have some depcitions like what Strider_UK submitted is actually more to the topic because it also explains towing. http://www.uscg.mil/lantarea/iip/FAQ/Icebergs_11.shtml |
