im gonna be buying a 1/350 titanic soon, and i want some tips, on anything like tools to use, paint colors, paint brands, etc.

my first question is, is the arbrush the best tool to use on the red on the hull?

i mean iv heard things like this:

using a brush leaves brush marks on the hull - dont want that.

spray paint is to thick and takes out the details - dont want that.

airbrush comes out not to thick or thin, u can see all the surface details still and is easyer to controll, and comes out thick enuff.

if any one can find or post some pics of titanic models that that was painted by airbrush *especialy the red on the hull* id realy apreciate it.

any one else can definatly feel free to post there models, and explain good techniques they used on there models that me and other ppl can benefit from.

thanks,

kyle!

Airbrush is definately the way to go. I'd use it on my model, but I can't afford all that. Although I am using brushes, I'm using my own paints too. I'm using oils, and mixing all my own colors. Looks great so far! Makes the model look hand carved, and the oils make it look so realistic, so natural. I spray painted all the pieces with black matte spray paint though so I have a better surface to work/paint on. Painting on a black background also gives it a more realistic look and requires fewer coats of paint. It also I am using the Revell kit with all the Gold Medal parts. I've been working on the thing for a year now. I'm trying to be as accurate as I can manage, and I want it to look really nice. So I'm taking my time lol. I won't work on it unless I'm in the mood to work on it. It looks nice so far.

Also, spray paint is ok as long as you are VERY carefull with it (basically if you follow the directions). Like I said, I use black matte on all my pieces. I spray at a good distance though, and only one or 2 good passes at a time. Let it dry, then repeat the process over, and over until it is solid. It can be time consuming, but rewarding when done right.

You need one pass each time. if you are using cellulose paint ie the stuff in the fizz tins one good pass is enough the let it dry. keep adding coats untill you have acheived the right consitancy.

If you are usng 2 pac paint, well..... dont. it's to thcik unless used in an airbrush.

oops didn't see jessics post. I would just go with what she said.

I fly large scale model aircraft and all of my aircraft have been spray painted or covered using thin solar film. Unfortuantley they can crash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not my plane by the way.

Hey Shaun!

The picture is actually kinda funny lol, but the fact that you build and fly those things is something! Also to answer your question about being into aerodynamics (I thought I would post it here instead), well I've just been into aviation since I was a baby. Just something I've always been into, I used to (and still do) build little models that I designed and built from scratch, and they would actually fly! The models were all flexible wing and membrane wing designs which I think, and always have, are the best way to go (I have always favored hang gliders and trikes). I started flying the Cessna 172 when I was 14, first to solo in the Civil Air Patrol Flight Acadmy at 16. I've also been into birds my whole life and I study their flight rather intensly (it is very complex) since I am working on a human powere ornithopter project of my own and it is getting into the latter stages. I've been working on that since I was 14. I also intend to design a couple of small, recreational jet planes with a carbon and fiberglass airframe. These actually stemmed from my initial (ornithopter) project. I hope to be the first to fly in the manner that I am attempting. A lot of intense studies (such as aerodynamics, aerodynamics of flapping flight, anatomy and physiology of humans, bats, birds, pterosaurs, some insects, and even aircraft we have today) I have done from as many angles as possible to get this design.

I think the best designed aircraft are many of the passenger/commercial jets, some military jets, hang gliders, and trikes. There are a few prop planes that are beautifully designed as well, like the DC- 3. Just beautifully designed IMO.
Sorry for the length of this, but it seems you're into this stuff too!

Hi jessica,

I know were your coming from. I have been flying large scale models for 3 years now. I have always had a passin for flight and love to study aerodynamics. I am hopefully going to become an avionic specialist in the british army. and the go onto flying helicopters.

I dont like helicopters as mcuh as aeroplanes. i love aeroplanes
dont know why. it ws just built into my mind when i was born i think.

I love aerodyamics. always have.

So how is your project coming along and what stage are you at.
heres another pic, this actually hit a tree. you can see the damge to the wing were it actually hit. Unforunatley the fuselage is slpit.

this isn't my plane by the way. just a pc i found on a site.

LoL that picture is funny. Sad, but funny.

I don't like helicopters much either, but I can appreciate them. The amount of power required to lift and move them, being as heavy as they are. Not like what air planes do, which is use and depend on forward speed to get their lift. Helicopters are continuously putting out enough power and thrust to move air equal to (hovering), and much more than their weight through out flight. Amazing when you think about it. Complex machines.

As for my project, well I'm trying to start testing now. Just something to move along the ground with to start. Biggest problem has been getting the money to pay for the materials. I'm starting off with simple stuff, and will use models as well.
