Hi!

I've got a question about Mr Andrews since long ago. I own a Titanic-Musical CD and after watching the Horner-movie have noticed, that the character says pretty much the same thing: "Honestly, Sir, I have built her from scratch and I know certain things..."
So here's my question: Did he say these words? And if so: did he always dislike the word "unsinkable" or does he only recognize the truth in the end?
I hope there are lots of Andrews specialists in here that might help me.
Thanks in advance
Kristina

Arianne,
i personaly dont think Andrews ever described Titanic as being unsinkable, it was the media that reported it as being unsinkable, so when the public read the papers, it made them think she was too.

as for Andrews saying the exact things he said in the movie, i doubt it, maybe someone else can prove that he did.
his biography on encyclopedia- tianica says that he broke the news to captain smith that titanic would sink, but it doesnt say he said Honestly, Sir, I have built her from scratch and I know certain things..." or any other things you hear him say in any movies.

heres his biography on encyclopedia- titanica:

HI!

First of all: thanks for the link, I'm gonna read it and I think that it's very interesting.

Of course these are not exactly the words he said. These are the ones from the musical. In the movie f.e. Ismay sais: This ship [i:95dd3c9576]cannot[/i:95dd3c9576] sink! And Andrews says: This ship is built from Scratch and I assure you: It [i:95dd3c9576]can[/i:95dd3c9576]!

That's what I mean.

Yep..no such thing as unsinkable...I don't see how anyone ever even got that idea...if it were me, I would've never believed it. No matter what anyone said. :?

The unsinkable myth was a comment made by a Scottish technical journal re: the water-tight compartments and doors, that was twisted around by the media. White Star Line never said any such thing, and I'll leave it to you to figure out why they never contradicted it, either.

hint: safety was like, a very big selling factor. check for other ships' sinkings around the turn of the century and you'll see.

Hi!

A number of high-ranking White Star officials actually *did* opine that the ship was unsinkable, although a number of qualifiers were used. See:

Kindest regards,

Mark.

That is probably what people in wind powered boats thought. When Titanic was said to be unsinkable, it sunk.
