I know the Mauretania and Lusitania were both more powerful and faster than the Olympics, but were their any other ships faster than Titanic and Olympic in 1912?

I was wondering about this today. What is their over all rank in regards to speed - 3rd, 4th, 5th fastest in the world? (I know Titanic was never fully tested).

Did the Germans have a faster greyhound? When Imperator and Vaterland came along, they were not faster, were they?

Im pretty sure lusitania was the fastest then mauretania and then titanic and olympic i got the ratio today from miles to knots and 40knots equals 46 miles or 1 mile is 0.8 knots

Didnt' mauretanis top lusitania by a few knots? Mauretania was 26.7 and held the riband for many years.

The olympic classes were fast for their size, i mean, 21 cruising Knots with 2 reciprocating steam engines and 44,000 tonnes of ship- id say thats pretty good! She was about 80,000 hp and 70 rpm- face it, they were good engines!

Lusitania and Mauretania, once they captured the blue ribbond from the Germans, went back and forth in setting the new crossing time by shaving a couple of minutes of each others record. Mauretania grabbed it sometime between 1907 and when her sister sank in 1915, and held it for about 27 years afterwards.

What I want to know is: was there any other ships that were faster than Titanic and Olympic in 1912 (other than the Maury and Lucy)? I don't think there were any, but I am not for sure.

I'm not sure it was by a few knots, but Mauretania did have the edge over Lusitania in speed -- yes.

I agree. More remarkable is that Olympic logged 23-24 knots on several occasions.

Olympic's engines could develop 59,000 horsepower according to her chief engineer in 1911; the reciprocating engines could attain up to 83 r.p.m. while the figure for the turbine is about 190 r.p.m. The 80,000 horsepower figure is slightly high even for Mauretania, while Mauretania's turbines had a designed revolutions per minute of 180.

Best wishes,

Mark.
