Yes, although I've been told by a number of maratime types that if he pulled that stunt today he would have been fired for endangering his passengers.

Aww Lee, where is your sense of adventure?! LOL Actually, a jolly good thing he did come dashing to the rescue...things would have got even more unpleasant had he not shown up...imagine twenty little lifeboats in a storm at sea....
Oh, for the record, as far as I am aware, his only book was "Home From the Sea", his autobiography, published in 1931...if you can find a copy, I suggest it as reading...a cracking good story. |

Hey, I'm not arguing - as far as I'm concerned, he is one of THE heroes of the night. All I was saying is that if it happened now, he would get hammered...which kinda explains why there are so dang few heroes these days.

I think the problem is risk taking is no longer a socially approved activity, actually.

Lights,
As far as I know that book "Home From the Sea" is very hard to come by. I did some research a while back and when I did see it the price was through the roof!!!! Actually I did see it on Ebay once. I still keep my eyes open for it though, thanks |

Dear Lee, I think you're right about risk-taking is no longer a socially acceptable behaviour :(
Dear Betty, As for Capt. Rostron's book...you think THAT'S bad? Try over a $1000.00 for a copy of TITANIC AND OTHER SHIPS that had been autographed by Lightoller on ebay last year! |

Lights,
Wow, $1,000 that is waaaaay out of my range. Most of the books I have I bought on Ebay and I found some good ones. The most expensive was The Ship That Stood Still Autographs of survivors go high and especially a signed book |

I guess Bob Dylan said it best: "The Times They Are A Changing". I think that's what makes a good Captain, even he did endanger his passengers, but it was to save other from a freezing death. I wonder what these Captains on these ships today would do? |
