theres been a big argument at my school about the titanic, someone said that the titanic hit a boat. they got laughed at like mad, but it was later that i asked them why they said that, it turned out they meant after it left port while passing ireland, this wasnt why it sank, it just scraped it, but it loosened the bolts and gave them no chance later on, i found out this in a bit less detail on a history cd and the other boat was called the new york liner
but it only said this
[quote:7c71ce9df3]titanic leaves port and narrowly avoids collision with new york liner[/quote:7c71ce9df3]
because it was in so little detail i was wondering if you could help me out a bit, maybe a little more detail please
thanks :D

That little snippet you posted most likely is describing [i:4705d804ca]Titanic's[/i:4705d804ca] run in with the smaller liner, the [i:4705d804ca]New York[/i:4705d804ca], which was double moored with (I believe) the [i:4705d804ca]Oceanic[/i:4705d804ca] at Southampton. As the [i:4705d804ca]Titanic[/i:4705d804ca] passed by, she pulled the [i:4705d804ca]New York[/i:4705d804ca] off her moorings and caused the smaller liner's stern to drift within 12 feet of the [i:4705d804ca]Titanic[/i:4705d804ca]. Some nifty manuevering on Smith's part and quick thinking by the tug captains prevented the two ships from colliding.

As far as the [i:4705d804ca]Titanic[/i:4705d804ca] colliding with another vessel in Ireland, I can tell you that's the first time I heard that.

The RMS [i:4705d804ca]Olympic, [/i:4705d804ca] however, did collide with the HMS [i:4705d804ca]Hawk[/i:4705d804ca] in 1911 and suffered severe damage to her starboard quarter.

LColburn's right. There was a near collision when Titanic left Southampton but near Ireland...I've never heard that either.
I'll try and find what I can about an actual collision though.

Not that this has much to do with the near collision..but..someone in my family was brought to America on the [i:ee9904697d]New York[/i:ee9904697d] about 8 years before the Titanic incident. I just thought it was a cute little tidbit.
