I learned about the ship for the first time when I was 6 years old. It was when I watched the film "Raise the Titanic". It was a good movie at the time. The wreck had not been discovered yet and this of course fueled my imagination and the imagination of others as well. Our library only had one book about Titanic. Photographs were not as easily availably at the time, especially where I come from: Rural area in Southern Africa.
It wasn't until the discovery of the wreck that more and more relatted material became available. Now that I'm living in England it is a privelage to visit the memorial sites in person. I frequently remember seeing the engineer's memorial in books as a child. Being able to see it in colour and touch it was a special moment for me. Placing a bunch of flowers there was the only tribute I could afford. |
