No he said that, but he was't on the bridge when they saw the berg. Murdoch ordered the reverse engines and to turn, not smith. So u where half right.

The British, at the time, steered referencing the stern of the ship. If they wanted to turn towards port, the stern needs to go to starboard.

Sadly I'm not nautical minded, but to my knowledge port is left and starboard is right. So why did murdoch in the movie say 'hard to starbond' and the piolet turned left. If starboard means right. Just a thought.
