I think Smith probably just floated off the ship, in such a manner that Harold Bride stated.
Captain William Turner did the same thing on the Lusitania (although he survived). Really, would one want to really be inside a sinking ship's wheelhouse? I think I'd rather die of hypothermia from cold water than actually taking water in my lungs and dying painfully from drowning. On the subject of his body never being found, that is one point I always thought was so horrifying about the sinking. Where did those bodies go? Aparently, Officer Lowe stated that there were so many bodies at the scene of the sinking when he returned that he could not row through. But the next morning, Rostron only saw one body floating. Did the current take them away that quickly? In the end, the Mackey Bennatt and (the other ships......???) only found about 300 bodies out of 1500. It makes you wonder how many people were trapped in the ship, and how many just did not get recovered and eventually desentigrated into the water. |

noone actually saw him die, or where he died it was assumed he died on the bridge but perhaps he jumped off the back with that italian fellow. in either case his body wasnt found. but the again maybe he was like rose, wore a blanket, and changed his name at port. We'll never know. suspiciously he looks like Gorton the fish stick man....conspiracy theory lads. sorry just being silly.

He might have been inside the wheelhouse or the open bridge when it sank.
But, if I remember correctly, Harold Bride (assistant marconi officer) saw Smith dive into the water as the bridge submerged. |

I think cameron portrayed smiths final moments rather well. I'm sure he was in his bridge or cabin during the ships final moments. Since his body was never recovered i'd assume he closed the door and became a part of the sea.

Captains "usually" do go down with the ship but not always the case. But for the Titanic it am pretty sure he went down with it along with many others.
Yarmouth Castle was one ship I can think of right off the bat that the Captain did not go down. Instead he gets on a life boat and starts hauling for his life his crew wasn't to helpful neither *sigh* http://www.lostliners.com/Liners/Yarmouth_Castle/fire.html <-- go there if you wish to read more. -Cricket Korta'Ari- |

I think Captain Smith died on the Titanic. We will never know because if he did go down with the ship his bones would probably be gone or deep in the ocean floor.
