Bess,
Yes isn't it sad that many of the immigrants did not understand or speak English and so therefore did not know what the crew were talking about. Why didn't they have any crew members for 3rd class who could speak many languages. Well, maybe it would have helped and maybe not. But, the "locked gates" has always been one of my greatest research projects and I am always interested in it.

It is interesting but sad

Hmmm....... this subject always gets me thinking. i too have read contrasting stories. i read somewhere that the gates were unlocked and the reason most of third class weren't saved was because they didnt speak english and couldnt understand what was going on or anything.
but if teamtunas friend saw them locked with his own eyes then, i would guess thats the best source to believe.

Did you read about the "locked gates" as seen by a few dives in an article or book?

It was in a documentary that I used to have (until it disappeared). :D

Yes, I have all Charlie's books, but this wasn't in a book. He was buying me a glass of wine in the bar at the time. Sorry.

He has, however, a travelling show/lecture he puts on about Titanic at several of the cons he attends - if you're on the east coast and interested, I'll ask him which ones he'll be at for you.

Thanks teamtuna

I do have Charles Pelligrino's book "Ghost of the Titanic" and do remember reading about him and James Cameron. Was it in Ghosts of the Abyss? Can't remember off the top of my head

Actually, I heard it from Charlie Pelligrino, who is an old friend of mine on the SF Con circuit. He was down on the last Cameron dive as a scientific advisor (Charlie's the guy who discovered that the rusticles were actually bacterial colonies).

May I ask where you saw that photo of locked gates with shoes piled against it?

As a matter of fact, some of those locked gates have empty shoes piled against them, proof once again that third class did indeed take a beating.
