On Jan. 30 1945, the 25,500 ton German liner Wilhelm Gustloff, SEVERLY over-crowded with @ 10,600 (though the exact number of those onboard isn't known) sank, in the Baltic Sea, after 3 torpedos were fired from a Soviet sub. Only 964 were pulled from the freezing waters. The Gustloff was at that time being used as a hospital ship, with refugees fleeing from the Red Army, plus her sick and wounded, her doctors and nurses, and her crew. I can't enen visualize all these people crammed into a tiny cruise ship! The lives lossed that day is well over 8,500, yet very few people have heard of the Wilhelm Gustloff! Sad, really!
