Wasn't the name who wrote "The Titan" William T. Stead? He went down with the ship...ironically enough.
Did you know Operator Phillips brushed off the last ice warning of the night from the Californian of the ice field ahead? |

James Cameron has spent more time on Titanic ( through dives to the wreck site) than any of the passengers spent onboard when she was afloat.

I have a book somewhere (I can't find it) where they estimated the number of lice, fleas and rats on board. If I can find it I'll post the numbers.

Actually the Titanic was not the first to use SOS. The first ship to use the SOS signal was the Cunard liner SS Slavonia in 1909. She wrecked in the Azores and the use of SOS was proven to be succesful in helping to save passengers.
SOS does not stand for "save our souls", it was passed into service I believe in 1910 because of the ease that telegraphists could key it, rather than the normal cqd, wich took time. Jack Phillips knowing that sos was still not popular at the time recognized it as important to send out both distress signals. The fact that he did use sos finaly popularized it and from there, was used as the international code for distress. |

I'll see what I can add to this, but most of it is commom knowledge...
The first body pulled from the water, or "body #1" was a 9 year old boy named Master John Walter Van Billiard. His brother was also on the ship and his body was never recovered. I also read, though cannot confirm that the iceberg hit within 40 seconds of when it was first seen. There is a theory of a second iceberg that was just behind (to the side) of the first one which they missed. It is a theory, and should not be regarded as factual, as there's only a fraction of a percentage of a chance that's how it happened. But I'm stating it here so you may look for it if you are interested. In the 1997 film, James Cameron did the nude drawing of Rose. None of the lifeboats, when launched had more than 50 people on board. Most of them were tested with a weight of 70, and could have potentially held that many. The lifeboat that had the most rescued was a collapsable boat that was built for many fewer passengers than the main boats. James Cameron is one of the most important filmmakers of our time. (my opinion, but consider it fact...lol) Please correct anything that may be a mistake... |

The first SOS signal sent out from a ship in disaster was Titanic. The sos signal was ratified in 1908 but wasn't used, wireless operators were more use to CQD. SOS does not stand for save our ship, save our souls, or anything like that. It was an easy signal to get out 3 dots 3 dashes 3 dots.
