Capt. Smith from what little I've read was a product of his generation of liner captains. They took a lot of pride in the size and power of their ships which tended to promote a feeling of invulnerability in them. The prevailing logic and I've read that Capt. Smith embraced it was that the best way to deal with potential danger in ship's path was to push on through quickly and get it behind you. Lesser ships like Californian may have to stop for ice warnings but not Titanic, by God. Like so many other things it was this thinking that Titanic's sinking helped to change.

She was able to beat her projected ETA, but she was not capable of taking the existing record for the route-
Not sure about course change, but Smith as captain holds responsibility for the safety of his ship and passengers. If Ismay did order such a thing, and he complied, the captain would bear full responsibility at a board of inquiry for anything resulting since his is the legal responsibility in a court of law. The fact that the managing director of the line ordered it would not absolve the captain of doing something he knows to be dangerous. Jim :pint: |

Be that as it may it wasn't Captain Smith's fault. It was by the orders of J. Bruce Ismay that he increased his speed, and lit the last four boilers in the boiler room. Ismay was out to obliterate the Cunard Line's business, and shatter Atlantic speed records, by beating the estimated arrival time to New York City. I'm not sure about this one, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Captain Smith alter the ship's course at one point in time during the voyage?

Actually the passenger ships of the Cunard Line were known for thier speed, such as Mauretania.
White Star Line was known for style and service. Some accusations were leveled at Titanic's Captain that he was going for a record on the Atlantic run, but she was not capable of bettering the existing time for a passenger steamer on that run. Jim :pint: |
